"You take such pride in being the best, and your effort pays off. I am looking forward to retirement this spring, and as I reflect on my association with Follett over the last seven years, I realize how much I've learned, thanks to your website. Thank you."

Since 1995, Follett Library Resources has commissioned work from Calvin Nicholls. We are proud to claim ownership of more than 60 of his works. His paper sculptures have become synonymous with the identity of Follett Library Resources.

Calvin Nicholls:

The Process - from sketch to sculpture

"I work through a series of sketches and decide on the final detail before the sculpture begins."

The Technique - adding texture and form

"Initially a rigid form is constructed which establishes the contours of the subject and provides a stable base upon which the detail pieces are attached. Each component is cut and textured through the use of a collection of wooden and metal tools. I monitor the interaction of light and shadow on the sculpture as I work. With its completion, I create a more elaborate set with sophisticated studio lights. Final enhancements are made at this stage prior to photography."

Archival Originals - durable and permanent

"The inherent strength and archival quality of my monochromatic paper sculptures assures an extremely high degree of permanence. The fine art papers and adhesives used are chemically stable. These products are often used in the production and restoration of fine books."

"From my attic studio I continue to strive for that elusive balance between subtle light and shadow and striking form and counterform. My goal is to create a focal point that prompts conversation. I want to create in the viewer’s mind the same fascination that I feel when I complete a sculpture, plunge the studio into darkness, and methodically apply light to capture the texture, form, and detail."
