eBooks are easy to order and easy to use!

Finding & Ordering eBooks

image

Ordering an eBook from us is just like ordering any other book.

There are no minimum order quantities; no contracts; no special handling, usage, or annual subscription fees; and no detailed technical requirements. You can search for and order eBooks the same way you can search for and order all our other books and audiovisual materials - just log in to TITLEWAVE to get started.

eBooks are automatically included in your TITLEWAVE searches.

If you want to limit your search to eBooks, just click the Collection Development search link and check the eBooks box under Bindings. Then fill in any other search criteria you want to use such as keyword, copyright, interest and/or reading level, classifications, and reviews. Your search results will be limited to the eBooks that meet your search criteria.

Not sure if the eBook you’re thinking about ordering has the material you need?

Just click the yellow Preview button image on the Title Detail screen, and you’ll be able to evaluate the book by viewing a few pages.

Plus, your eBook prices include the cost of the MARC record.

Simply import your eBook MARC records into your library’s electronic catalog. They’re immediately available, and just like a print book, the eBook will appear when you search by Dewey, subject, and/or the keyword "eBook."

Using Your eBooks

image

You view your eBooks by clicking the Internet link in the 856 MARC tag, or by clicking on the preview button that some systems provide.

This link opens an Internet browser window that displays the actual electronic copy of your eBook that’s stored on our server. This means students, teachers, and administrators can utilize your school’s eBooks from a computer that allows them access to your library’s electronic catalog.

Once you click the eBook link, you can preview it right from your library’s electronic catalog .

The eBook preview mode displays one page of the book at a time. Easy-to-understand icons at the top of the eBook preview window let you go to different pages or chapters, search for specific words and terms, and even look up words you don’t know in Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary - all with the touch of a mouse. If during the preview the eBook becomes inactive for 15 minutes, the eBook will automatically be returned to the eBook shelf.

When the download/check-out period is over, the downloaded eBook immediately becomes inaccessible.

At the same point, the original electronic copy of the eBook is automatically put back in circulation so that once again it’s accessible from your library’s electronic catalog.

Testing Follett eBooks in Your Circulation System

Follett Library Resources has provided access to a sample copy of The call of the wild by Jack London, the MARC record for which can be downloaded here. MARC records for Follett eBooks can be imported using the same process that you use when importing records for your regular print books. Once you have imported the sample MARC record into your circulation system, the eBook is accessed through your OPAC, using the link in the 856 tag. If you need assistance with the import process for your circulation system, please contact your circulation system vendor for assistance

Note: As this sample record is available to all of our customers, it will not contain local holdings information specific to your school. If your system requires a material number to make items available to your patrons, you will need to add this information to the record after importing the sample.

Frequently Asked Questions about eBooks

What types of books are available as eBooks?

All different types of eBooks are available from Follett Library Resources - we offer everything from picture books to all levels of fiction, nonfiction, and reference materials.

How are other schools using eBooks?

Just like print books, eBooks have a wide variety of uses. Middle and high school students and teachers like the fact that eBooks can be accessed right from your library’s electronic catalog. They also find that our eBooks’ built-in keyword search function makes them great for research and reference. Elementary school teachers find the fact that eBooks can be projected onto a screen very helpful for reading instruction.

How do you download an eBook?

Downloading eBooks should be done through your circulation system to ensure that you are generating accurate circulation statistics, but also to make sure checkouts are correctly reported. If your system does not provide a specific checkout option, simply click the large Down arrow that appears in the box at the upper-right corner of the eBook preview window.

How do you control the download/checkout period of an eBook?

That depends on what type of electronic circulation system your school is using. If you are using the most recent version of either the Follett Software Company Destiny circulation system, the Sagebrush Infocenter circulation system, or the Dynix Sirsi circulation system, then you control the download/checkout period and circulation of your eBooks through that system. If you are using any other electronic circulation system, you set the download/checkout period for all your eBooks when you place your first order with us. The default download/checkout period is 3 days, but you can specify another time frame.

Can your eBooks be downloaded to a handheld device?

Yes, but first they must be downloaded to a computer that has Adobe Reader 6.x or 7.x installed AND Adobe Reader for mobile devices. Then the downloaded eBook can be transferred to a PDA running the Palm OS5 operating system or the current PocketPC OS.

Can you print pages from an eBook?

While most eBooks do allow printing, we can not guarantee printing privileges, as this varies from publisher to publisher.

Can more than one person access an eBook at the same time?

Only one person can view or download an eBook at a time. If you want more than one person to have access to an eBook title at the same time, then you will need to purchase multiple copies of the eBook.

Log in to TITLEWAVE to find the eBooks you need.
